3G network closure imminent

Australia's 3G networks are set to shut down from October 28, and the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association is urging all Australians to ‘check your tech’ to ensure they remain connected after the switch-off.

Telstra and Optus will deactivate their 3G networks from October 28. TPG Telecom-owned Vodafone closed its network in January.

This closure will affect devices that rely on 3G networks, including some 4G devices that default emergency calls to 3G.

“Fast and reliable mobile network connectivity is critical for Australians and for our economy. The 3G network currently uses up spectrum that could be better served providing more efficient 4G and 5G, which is why this switchover is important,” AMTA chief executive Louise Hyland said.

“We strongly recommend that consumers who need to upgrade their handsets purchase them from reputable dealers based in Australia or consult their mobile service providers for suitable options.”

The website is available in 11 languages. Consumers are advised to contact their service providers for upgrade solutions if impacted.

When purchasing new or second-hand devices, it’s crucial to ensure they support Australian mobile frequency bands, 4G and 5G calling, and emergency calling. The ‘Check My Device’ tool at 3Gclosure.com.au can be used to verify compatibility before purchase.
