Two disciples, after Jesus’ death and resurrection, were walking home on the road to Emmaus when Jesus appeared to them. They did not recognise him.
Jesus went to stay with them and, just before he disappeared, he broke bread with them.
As they took communion with Jesus their eyes were opened and they recognised Him.
This reminds us of the story of Adam and Eve. When they ate from the tree of good and evil, their eyes were opened.
After that God expelled them from the Garden of Eden so they could not eat from the Tree of Life again.
Had they been able to eat from the Tree of Life they would have lived forever in their fallen state, eternally separated from God.
Here in today’s scripture we see the disciples’ eyes are opened as they come to the Tree of Life and eat and drink with Jesus.
Now they could live forever with Jesus, because their sins had been forgiven.
They had been saved from their fallen state through their belief in Jesus.
They and all believers could once again live in perfect fellowship with Jesus just as Adam and Eve had in the beginning.
Jesus’ death and resurrection had made the way for people to come to him and eat the fruit of eternal life. Jesus is that Tree of Life.
Every time we come to the Tree of Life our eyes are opened a little more.
We come to know him more as we draw our life from Him.
He renews us, He restores us, He strengthens us and He enlightens us.
Come and freely eat from the Tree of Life. Come to Jesus.
