With the fourth running of the event tomorrow, she’s ecstatic it still forms an important part of the Chamber’s Do It In Deni Street Bazaar and remains popular with entrants and spectators.
The Bazaar and the 2024 Dash will be held in the Deniliquin CBD tomorrow - the first time it’s ever been held in November.
The Bazaar has traditionally been hosted to coincide with the Victorian Labour Day Weekend in March, but a decision was made to aim for Melbourne Cup Day weekend instead this year.
The new timing prevents a clash with other regional events, and larger ones like Moomba Festival.
Mrs Keech and her little sausage Kendrick have competed in the Dash every year, but she said it’s purely for the fun not the glory.
“Kendrick has not been able to finish a race yet,” Mrs Keech laughed.
“But we’re always very keen to be involved.
“It was not long after I got Kendrick I started noticing just how many Dachshunds there were in Deni, and a friend sent me a clip of a race somewhere. So we gave it a go.
“And just recently there was a huge one in the Hunter.
“Our race averages about 20 entrants each year, and they come from all over. Our very first winner was from Echuca.
“There’s always a lot of enthusiasm, and it is always very entertaining.”
While it’s not compulsory to dress your Dachshund for the race, do keep in mind that a fashions on the field for stylish sausage dogs and their owners will also be held.
The Dash is just one of a number of attractions being offered at the Street Bazaar, which will be held in the CBD from 9am to about 1pm.
Cressy St will be closed between Napier and Edwardes St to allow for local businesses and organisations not located in the CBD to have a market stall.
CBD businesses will offer shopping specials, and make sure to take advantage of the CBD eateries or the food vans.
Entertainment includes live music, children’s games and activities and a visit from the Chamber bunny.
