If you have water and gum trees and add grain, what do you get. Corellas.
During the late ‘60s I lived in Kununurra, WA.
A new airstrip was built close to the diversion dam in which trees provided an overnight perch for corellas.
The Uni of WA came to make a count or estimate the numbers that transited across the new airstrip morning and evening. 63,000 was their findings.
The corella population here in Tocumwal, I can tell you, is comparable.
Why? Only one mile north-west is a 24/7 inexhaustible diner, otherwise known as Grain Corp.
In past years I have had communications with Grain Corp and even got to know their CEO on a first name basis.
Then there was the council who refused to discuss the matter with me.
Grain Corp has not being a good corporate citizen.
They sent a representative from Wagga but he wasn’t interested in the situation.
The council didn’t act on the situation despite the public outcry. I hope this new council will.
Corellas. Raucous, dirty, disease carrying and destructive.
In addition they have forced out other bird life except ducks.
Their destruction of the native trees is what bothers me. What’s the difference between a mice plague and corella plague? The answer is very little.
The picture shows corellas on the Grain Corp site.
Granted the birds in this picture are on what is covered grain, however not all bunkers are covered and there is plenty spilt on the site overall.
Yours etc.
