National Rugby League stars Charlie Tonga and Solomon Haumono, former National Soccer League player Gerry Gomez and Southern Districts rugby player Makayla Manu will be special guests at a series of sports clinics tomorrow.
They will also speak at Deniliquin’s Ignite Life Church Saturday night, and have now also agreed to feature at a Deniliquin Blue Heelers Rugby Union Club hosted Q&A function at the Railway Hotel tonight.
The events have all been organised by Murray River Police District in partnership with the Blue Heelers, Deniliquin Soccer Academy and the Sydney-based Impact Team.
Tonight’s Q&A session will be from 6pm at the Railway Hotel.
Tomorrow, soccer and rugby clinics will be hosted at Deniliquin Rotary Park from 9am.
It will be followed by a barbecue lunch from 12.30pm.
The session at Ignite Life Church, at 249 Finley Rd, will begin at 6pm tomorrow.
Murray River Police District Chief Inspector Michael Fuller said all are welcome to attend any of the events, which are aimed at increasing police interaction with the community.
“Come along, meet some new people, learn some new skills and maybe even tackle the police in conversation or on the field,” Chief Insp Fuller said.
“We wanted to create an opportunity for conversation with young people and adults through sport, and the opportunity for them to hear from sporting legends who have faced challenges in their own lives as well as playing at the highest level.
“If it breaks down barriers with police, and gives people some things to consider as they make better choices, that’s the outcome we want.”
