From an enthusiastic membership of more than 40 when the Catholic Women’s Social Guild, as it was then known, was formed in Jerilderie in June 1959, to a current membership of four, the decision was made to close the branch at the end of 2023.
The CWSG became the Catholic Women’s League of Victoria and Wagga Wagga in May 1970.
The Jerilderie branch celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2009, with a membership at that time of 15.
The Jerilderie branch was the last remaining in the Wagga Wagga Diocese, with many Diocesan members opting for on-line membership of Catholic Women’s League as their branches closed due to advancing years and people not willing or available to take on executive positions, or able to get to meetings due to work commitments

Jerilderie Public School will hold its Year 6 farewell dinner on Thursday, December 7, and presentation night will be on Tuesday, December 12, not December 8 as printed in last week’s column.

St Joseph’s Catholic School graduation Mass will be on Thursday, December 7, and presentation award evening on Friday, December 8.

Notice of the death of Carmel Buck last week was noted with sadness.
Carmel died on Friday, November 10 at Shepparton Private Hospital, aged 76.
Carmel’s husband Mick pre-deceased her.
Carmel, Mick and family lived and worked in Jerilderie for many years, including running the older BP Service Station in Southey St.
Sympathy is extended to Carmel’s family: Veronica, Stuart, Rodney, Carlie and Dion, and their families.

Before school breaks up for the Christmas holidays, parishioners of St Joseph’s Catholic Church and the community of St Joseph’s School will be holding a morning tea in the school, on Sunday, December 10, after the 10.30am Mass.
This is to farewell Father Blaise Kurek, who will be moving to the parishes of Ganmain/Coolamon in the new year, after 12 years serving the parishes of Jerilderie, Coleambally and Darlington Point.
Ladies are invited to bring a plate of simple food to share.
Father Cyprian Onuarah will be administrator of St Joseph’s parish Jerilderie from mid-January 2024.

An owner has been found for the black walking stick which mysteriously appeared on the back seat of the Ryan family car a couple of weeks ago.

Jerilderie Red Cross members are grateful to the community for participating in their recent raffle, which will be drawn on December 6, with lucky winners announced soon afterwards.
The local Red Cross branch sends contributions to the ‘Let’s Talk’ program which is situated in Dubbo and covers all of NSW.
This group provides opportunities for regional and remote communities, assistance to farmers in drought, help after floods, and a listening ear in increasing levels of social isolation.
‘Let’s Talk’ is fully funded by Red Cross, and clubs.
Our local Red Cross branch meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 1pm at the sports club.
If you’d like to know more just turn up, and you will be made welcome.

A free road safety workshop will be held at the Monash Media Room of Jerilderie library on Friday, December 1, from 10.30am to noon.
It helps people over the age of 65 to make safer choices when driving, walking, using a mobility scooter, or catching public transport.

A reminder to Jerilderie Hospital Auxiliary members that the last meeting for the year will be at 11am tomorrow at the Jerilderie Hotel, followed by a Christmas luncheon.
Numbers for lunch were to have been confirmed to Loretta by last Friday.

Jerilderie CWA hosted the last Sturt Group meeting and Christmas luncheon which was a very sad day for all.
Due to CWA of NSW rearranging groups, Sturt Group branches have been invited to other groups with Jerilderie now part of Hume Group.
Sturt is now closed and no longer a group.
The Jerilderie branch will be attending a barbecue provided by Murrumbidgee Council to be held for new residents to provide information about CWA.
The next street stall will be held Friday, December 8 with our usual array of goods for Christmas, which is just around the corner.
Jerilderie CWA will be in recess now until February 2024.
