Finley pauses to remember

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, an armistice was declared, bringing an end to World War I.

Residents across the Southern Riverina paused last Wednesday to mark that historical moment, with services held in each community.

Commemorations all began with a minute’s silence at 11am.

In Finley, at least 70 adults and children gathered at Memorial Park where newly elected Finley RSL Sub-branch president Jeff Ward led the proceedings.

‘‘It’s important we pause, even if it’s only briefly,’’ Mr Ward said.

‘‘We are here to remember them, and we should never forget their sacrifice.

‘‘Everything we take for granted now — our freedom, our lifestyle, our liberties — is due to those men and women who have served and for many who gave their life for us.’’

Former Royal Australian Army servicewoman Joella Allan was the day’s guest speaker.Wreaths were laid by the RSL Sub-branch, members of the public and students from Finley High School, Finley Public School, Finley St Joseph’s Primary School and Biralee Preschool.
