A special ceremony to ensure Jerilderie’s youngest residents were included in Remembrance Day activities was held last week.

With Remembrance Day itself falling on a Saturday, the Jerilderie RSL sub-Branch organised a separate ceremony on Friday to enable primary school students and staff to attend.

Held at the Jerilderie Cenotaph, it brought together 57 students and staff members combined from both Jerilderie Public School and St Joseph’s Jerilderie.

As part of the ceremony, representatives from each school were given the opportunity to lay a wreath in honour of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Jerilderie RSL sub-branch member Laurie Blackmore spent time explaining the significance of remembering to the young children before reciting The Ode and playing The Last Post.

Mr Blackmore said the sub-branch had decided to organise the ceremony to ensure the younger generation understand the significance of Remembrance Day

“I am most impressed with the maturity of the students during the ceremony, and the respect they show throughout.,” he said.
