Not only did the clash against Tocumwal come down to the last end but it was the last four bowls that gave Jerilderie a winning three shot advantage.
Even though Lucy Gurciullo’s team of Mary Catena, Terry McGee and Ken Dallas lost their rink 29 to 20, they were the heroes of the day.
Gurciullo’s rink was the last rink playing, gaining four shots on the 22nd and 23rd ends to help Jerilderie gain a three shot lead over the whole match.
They had the crowd on the edge of their seats when Tocumwal won the 24th end by three shots to tie the match with one end to play.
As the crowd cheered each bowler on, the result looked like it was going Tocumwal’s way after McGee played two close bowls to take back the advantage only to see Tocumwal’s Lois Bird sneak in for shot.
Three more bowls went wayward before Dallas rolled Bird’s shot bowl out to take back the lead.
Gurciullo took advantage of the situation and played a magnificent skipper’s shot to have three bowls in the head and when the last Tocumwal bowl rolled through Gurciullo declared the end and Jerilderie celebrated a win by those three shots.
It was an exciting end to a match played in great spirit with Tocumwal players very gracious in defeat.
On the other rinks Jerilderie skipper Terry Chaplain and team Betty Conn, Bill Williams and Mick Pitt, stretched a halfway nine shot lead to 10 shots, before eventually winning their rink 18 to 14 .
Winning 14 ends out of the 25 was the difference from being the team in front at the end of play.
Colin Bryce’s team of Fred Scammell, Faith Bryce and John Bryce went shot for shot against their opponents before Jerilderie ran away with an eight shot win, 24 to 16.
After winning Division Three, Jerilderie will be promoted to Division Two next season with the club looking forward to the challenge.
