Jerilderie Public School is proving it can be honed with nothing but a plastic bucket, and two drum sticks.
Principal Nyree Taylor said the ‘bucket drumming’ program has brought many unforeseen benefits to their little school of about 30 children.
Chris Bodey from South West Music Regional Conservatorium coordinates the program, and instructs bucket drumming across the state.
‘‘There is one hundred per cent participation,’’ Ms Taylor said of the program.
The bucket drumming program replaces the ukulele music program which has been held in previous years, and Ms Taylor said the feedback is so far positive.
‘‘Some children found changing chords with the ukulele challenging, whereas bucket drumming is very physically expressive.
‘‘All of the kids have readily picked it up.
‘‘They learned ‘We Will Rock You’’ (by Queen) within 20 minutes.
‘‘They are all learning how the play grooves, and they honestly sound like they’ve been doing it for much longer.
‘‘They are a more cohesive class because of it and it has given kids a boost in self confidence and esteem.
‘‘The P&C funds the program so all students get to participate. It’s not like a private tuition class where only some students get the benefit.’’
