Locals are warned, if you have not already noticed, that magpies around town are already becoming more protective.
Hold tight - we’re checking permissions before loading more content
Magpies have begun laying and nesting, which usually occurs between July and November.
With nesting, they will also become more protective, particularly toward perceived threats, bringing about what most Australian’s call ‘swooping season’.
Your best bet to stay safe is steering clear of nesting spots for the magpies.
Alternatively, understanding that magpies are a bird with fantastic memory and will remember whether you ‘shoo’ them off or throw them a bit of food will go a long.
PT staff have already reported a magpie has started swooping at the corner of Edwardes St and Civic Place, near the skate park. Please take care.
Tones goes viral
Outside the events offered by Deniliquin Play on the Plains Inc, the opportunity to see big name artists in our region are limited.
So it’s no surprise that when Aussie music sensation Tones And I announced she would be performing in Echuca this month, tickets were snapped up in record time.
And we’re sure some excited Deni locals are among them.
Originally, only announcing one pop-up show for Monday, August 19, it sold out so quickly another set was added for the Tuesday night. But alas, those tickets are exhausted too.
When announcing the performances on social media Tuesday night, the artist accompanied it with a note that said ‘Echuca; you asked, I listen!’.
The singer/songwriter is doing a few of these pop up shows around the country to celebrate her new album 'Beautifully Ordinary'.
Each will be a “special and intimate 30 minute acoustic set, followed by a meet and greet signing”.
More music around the corner
For those who missed tickets to Tones And I, never fear because more amazing music is just around the corner.
As of today, there’s now exactly eight weeks until the Deni Ute Muster!
Another legend of Aussie pop music will be a feature, with Amy Shark one of the main headline acts.
The headliners are American country music stars Kip Moore and Tyler Hubbard.
Other acts include Aussie favourite John Williamson, Amber Lawrence, Brad Cox, Fanny Lumsden, Brooke McClymont & Adam Eckersley, Sunny Cowgirls, Darlinghurst and 2024 Play On The Plains Battle Of The Bands winners Elestial.
And there’s also a massive list of around the grounds entertainment to enjoy this year too.

Art In Focus
Edward River Art Society (ERAS) opened its ‘Art In Focus’ exhibition last Friday, August 2 at the Riverbend Gallery.
The exhibition is part of the In Focus photography group, an initiative of ERAS that is now in its second year of exhibiting the art works.
The first show was run two years ago, and the resounding support the group and ERAS received called for another exhibition.
This broad variety of images has inspired fellow ERAS artists to create original artworks, drawings and paintings.
The original photography adorned the walls, accompanied by the pieces that were inspired by the photographs.
The exhibition features a number of mediums, giving those in attendance plenty to be able to explore, as well as purchase, with all art works for sale.
Naponda Farmers’ Market
The Naponda Farmers Market returns to the Deni CBD tomorrow.
It is held at the front of the Naponda store on Cressy St, every second Saturday of the month.
The market gives locals the opportunity to sell their wares, including food items, gifts, fruit and vegetables.
Affording people a space to display their products and sell them is one of the many ways Naponda Store and the Naponda Farmers’ Market support locals.
The Naponda store is a non-profit organisation that exists to support the community and any profits made from their markets are donated to the local Deniliquin Hospital.
Read more about what your support of this local market can achieve on page 5 of today’s edition.
Community Hub lunch
Deniliquin Community Hub will hold its community lunch today from noon until 1.30pm.
The Deniliquin Community Hub is opened Fridays for interested people to access, offering food relief.
The hub would like to continue to hold these community lunches, with this being their first.
The lunch will be held at the Deniliquin Uniting Church Hall at 65-70 Edwardes St, Deniliquin.
Attendees are asked to pay a gold coin donation to help with costs for organisers.
“Whether you’re a local worker, live locally, or just looking for a place to have a meal – we welcome you to our monthly community lunch,’ the Hub said.
“Creating a safe space for all people to connect, be encouraged and feel cared for as a valued member of our local community.”
