New drinking water supply pipeline for Nathalia

Goulburn Valley Water is set to construct a new 25km pipeline between Numurkah and Nathalia to enhance water supply reliability and support future growth in the region.

The pipeline will transport treated drinking water from the Numurkah Water Treatment Plant to storage tanks in Nathalia, replacing the current system of treating raw water from the Broken Creek at the Nathalia Water Treatment Plant.

The infrastructure upgrade aims to address challenges with fluctuating water quality in the Broken Creek due to climate change, while also tackling issues with ageing infrastructure at the Nathalia facility.

Goulburn Valley Water managing director Steve Capewell said the pipeline had been designed to meet Nathalia’s needs until 2060.

“This infrastructure upgrade is a significant investment in Nathalia’s long-term water security,” he said.

Construction along Katamatite-Nathalia Rd is expected to begin by the end of 2025, with completion scheduled for early 2027. The project is being developed in consultation with Moira Shire Council, Goulburn-Murray Water and the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action.

Water services will continue uninterrupted during construction, though some traffic disruptions are expected along the pipeline route. Affected landowners will be contacted with detailed information about the project timeline and potential access disruptions once the construction contract is awarded.
