Murrumbidgee Council has suggested one one of three streets located within the residential development be named Helena Parade, after Helena Pugh (1919-2013).
Helena dedicated her life as a bush nurse, providing essential healthcare services across NSW, including Darlington Point.
Her contributions extended beyond healthcare, as she played a pivotal role in community activities such as the Red Cross, balls, concerts and plays.
Tribute will also be paid to the Edward Family who have maintained a significant and enduring connection to Warangesda Mission and Darlington Point for generations, with the naming of Edwards St.
The development’s third road will recognise the cultural history of the region, and named Gugaa St.
It is named after the Wiradjuri totem Gugaa, which symbolises the goanna and serves as a unifying emblem for the Wiradjuri Nation.
This totem holds cultural significance, connecting all people — past and present — of Wiradjuri land.
Murrumbidgee Council Mayor Ruth McRae said these proposed street names reflect council’s commitment to honouring both the individuals who shaped our community and the indigenous heritage of this land.
“We encourage community feedback on these choices as we strive to celebrate and preserve Darlington Point's rich history.
“Comments on the proposed street names can be submitted to general manager John Scarce via email at mail@murrumbidgee.nsw.gov.au or mailed to PO Box 5, Darlington Point NSW 2706.
“The deadline for submissions is 5pm on Thursday, August 8.”
Proposed in 2022 and started in 2023, the Young St subdivision is intended to ease the housing shortage in Darlington Point.
The subdivision will comprise 55 allotments, ranging in size from 725m² to 1,052m².
It is hoped it will attract new families to the area, bringing economic benefits for local businesses, schools and other service providers.
The project was pursued after a 2022 survey of Murrumbidgee business operators showed 21 per cent of respondents believed a lack of affordable housing was the main reason their business had experienced difficulty finding suitable staff.
