The day aimed to foster community engagement while also allowing the women a chance to experience what the men’s shed is all about.
Steve Harris from the men’s shed and Rochester Community House member Heather Watson led the workshop and were there throughout the day to help the women with their projects.
The women were encouraged to take part in a group task, work on a project of their own or just sit and enjoy a cup of tea.
Those working on the group project had the chance to build wooden Christmas trees to be displayed at the Rochester Christmas Markets at the end of the year.
Participant Heather Long said it was her first time using heavy machinery, but she enjoyed it.
“I had no idea what to expect but I have been enjoying it,” she said.
“I had an appointment but I changed it so I could come here and I definitely plan on coming back.”
Most of the women had no previous experience with the tools and learnt how to operate the saw and lay out projects.
For Eileen McNeilly, the day was the perfect opportunity to finish some of her own projects.
Although she is no stranger to woodwork, she said the ladies day allowed her to belong somewhere.
“I am transitioning from teaching to retiring and I want to belong somewhere,” she said.
“I wanted to feel better about myself and know that I can do other things other than be a teacher because I’ve worked all my life, had kids and had everyone else’s kids. I need to be needed.
“It’s not competitive here, it’s not a ‘you’ve done a better job than me’ kind of thing, its very welcoming.”
At this stage, ladies’ day will continue every Friday from 9am to 1pm at the Rochester Men’s Shed.
All women are welcome to bring their own projects, join in on the group project or to come by for a cuppa.
