In addition to the series of fires which started between Conargo and Jerilderie (see page 1), local NSW Rural Fire Service and NSW Fire + Rescue brigades responded to four other grass fires in the Southern Riverina region.
And with hot and windy conditions predicted for today, with the possibility of more dry storms, firefighters are urging landholders and other community members to be vigilant.
Berrigan’s RFS brigade attended a grass fire in Berrigan’s south, on Riverina Highway Sunday evening.
Called in about 9pm, five firefighters responded with two trucks.
At the time the fire was reported it was listed as ‘advice’ level on the NSW Hazards Near Me app, warning nearby residents to wait for advice from area fire services.
Luckily, firefighters were able to get it under control within 30 minutes, without impacting any infrastructure.
Earlier the same day, about 1pm at Daysdale, on Federation Way, firefighters were called to another grass fire.
Burning no more than a hectare, the fire was quelled and under control in about 30 minutes.
A third small grass fire was attended by Finley RFS firefighters about noon on Sunday, off Pine Lodge Rd.
One truck and crew worked on the blaze for about an hour before it was extinguished.
At the same time, the Coree fire was burning out of control requiring assistance from all Southern Riverina fire stations.
The blazes came just days after the Southern Border RFZ zone started its Bush Fire Danger Period on November 1.
In the Mid Murray Zone, which includes Conargo and Jerilderie, the Bush Fire Danger Period started on October 1.
A cease harvest alert is expected to be declared for today, given predictions of wild weather.
The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting a high of 40°C, with wind speeds of up to 30km/h.
More thunderstorms are also predicted in the Riverina.
Berrigan Rural Fire Service member and Federation Zone Group Captain Greyd’n Davis said given the conditions and fire risks, local landholders will be subject to a no burn period as harvest ramps up.
“From November 14, there will be a no burn off period, aligning with harvest,” he said.
