Students have been creating a large scale mural with the help of Outback Theatre for Young People and local artist Jo Nathan.
The design behind the mural was inspired by bird’s eye view perspectives and mapping of the local area.
During the investigation of Blighty from above, it was discovered the school grounds combined with the harvester patterns on the surrounding farmland was shaped like a giant kangaroo, so that image formed the centre of the design.
The young artists then planned the surrounding artworks to echo the things they saw around the farm, on the road, and in the channels.
The mural has been created with funding support from Create NSW, Edward River Council and the Bullawah Community Grants Program from BayWa r.e.
For students like Gabrielle (surname not provided due to school policy) it’s been a chance to leave a lasting legacy to the school and explore her creative side.
“Working with an artist to plan and make a mural was challenging, but an opportunity of a lifetime,” Gabrielle said.
“It looks amazing.”
Principal Leanne Hedt is looking forward to celebrating the students’ achievements at the mural unveiling on Monday, July 1.
“Blighty Public School invites the local community to come along to the opening and see the result of the collaborative work of our local artist and the students,” she said.
“The mural will be a bright and bold asset for the school in years to come.”
The launch will include speeches and a light lunch, and anyone wishing to attend is asked to register by calling the school on 5882 6238.
