A social night was hosted to reveal the results of the competition, and to celebrate the 124th annual Berrigan Show, held on October 6.
Judging of the local crop entries was conducted by Nutrien Ag Finley agronomist Stacey Doolan last month.
“I had big expectations from the five crops, and I learned a lot,” she said.
“They were all the same variety, Scepter, sown within eight days of each other, all within 20 kilograms of sowing rate.
“With only a 150mm of growing season rainfall this year, to predict yields of over four tonnes, it is amazing for this year.”
Second in the competition, but earning the Dryland Wheat Farming Excellence Award, was GJ & PA Parr.
“There were five different crops, five different sowing machines, but it was the pure seed and variable rate urea application through NVDI and tiller counts that saw the Parr crop come out on top,” Ms Doolan said.
“The Parrs used seed from the prior year’s crop, which received reserve champion at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.”
Third in the wheat competition was awarded to the highest yielding crop of EM & RW Pyle, which was set up for a dry year.
The statewide Dryland Field Wheat Competition is supported by Suncorp Bank, Flexi-Coil, Lowes Petroleum, Duel Chelate, The Land, and AgShows NSW.
Berrigan Show president Neville Dalgliesh was on hand for Sunday’s presentations, and thanked all in attendance for their help at this year’s “very successful” show.
The show saw an increase in fun ring entries, a new school holiday program delivered thanks to a NSW Government grant, a very popular team penning, and a new scarecrow competition with thanks to the Berrigan Men’s Shed.
“We had great feedback this year, and are always open to new ideas. Please let us know,” he said.
