Saturday was Rovers president John Glowrey’s 300th club game, lacing up the boots for the reserves against Tocumwal.
In tribute of the milestone and the modest player, players were challenged to bring their footy gear along in anything but a traditional footy bag.
There were eskies, wheelie bins, a lawnmower and even kids’ suitcases.
But the man of the match took the prize when he rode onto the oval astride a pale yellow, vintage style bike.
He can write, and cook
The other big event for the Rovers during the week was its annual footballers’ cookoff.
And that’s where PT journalist Rowan Frazer proved he’s as handy in the kitchen as he is with a pen.
Rowan claimed the Cook-off Competition with a slow-cooked lamb shanks dish.
Last year’s winner Matt Wade came in fourth with his ‘international beef’, first-timer Kaiden Joss came in third with his butter chicken and tied runners-up were Daniel Mison with his simple-by-name but not in taste lamb casserole and in heartbreaking scenes also Adam Bodey for at least the third consecutive year with his Massaman chicken.
The club thanks taste testers and judges, Sean Drennan from Frank n Beans and Deniliquin RSL director Bob Crampton.
Register your burns
Firefighters are again reminding landholders of the need to register their planned burns after being called to a ‘false alarm’ at the weekend.
The Rural Fire Service was called to respond to a fire in the Blighty region.
On arrival, they found it was a controlled pile burn.
All burns must be registered via the ‘Notify Us’ portal, and to all neighbours 24 hours before lighting any fires.
The online portal can be found at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify.
Other rules and regulations relating to burns are available online or by contacting the Mid Murray Zone office on 5898 4100 or by going to www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/BFDP.
