As local football signings go, they don’t get much bigger than former AFL player Jeff Garlett.
The Carlton Blues and Melbourne Demons medium small forward played 107 games for the Blues from 2009 to 2014 and 78 games for Melbourne from 2015 to 2019 with much of the side who went on to win the 2020 AFL premiership.
Garlett also kicked 183 goals for Carlton leading the club’s goal kicking in 2013 and 138 goals for Melbourne, leading the Demons goal kicking in 2017, demonstrating his ability to hit the scoreboard.
He has played around the region since his last game in the AFL in 2019 and played for the Demons against Katunga in round 6 of this year’s Picola League, kicking a goal in the side’s 4-point loss and held a clinic for the under-14s and under-17s Jerilderie football sides that week also.
“JFNC and Jeff are absolutely pumped for the season ahead and the wealth of knowledge and experience Jeff will bring to our club,” the club said.
The club also announced that Sam Harrington would join the Dees in 2025.
Harrington is another strong player who has played around the border in the Ovens and Murray league, and training as part of the Greater Western Sydney Giants Academy.
“Coming back after an unlucky injury, Sam is fast on his feet, a lead up forward that knows where the goals are,” the club said.
“Sam will make a dynamic addition, adding another dimension to our forward line.”
The Jerilderie seniors football side finished in eighth place in a close run Picola League season, losing the first elimination final to Katunga by 79 points.
But with a few new signings, the Dees will be looking to go three games further in 2025.
Former AFL player Jeff Garlett took training with the young Dees last season.
