From rust to Redleg radiance, the change room area will be modernised with adjoining toilets and showers, umpires’ change facilities with an administration area, and an accessible bathroom with ramp access.
The $686,825 windfall includes contributions from the state government, Strathbogie Shire Council and the Longwood Football Netball Club.
Funds stem from the Regional Community Sports Fund, which is part of the Victorian Government’s commitment to deliver projects in regional towns following the cancellation of the Commonwealth Games in July 2023.
State Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland led the advocacy for the club to receive this funding.
She penned a letter of support to Strathbogie Shire Council, encouraging it to apply for the fund on Longwood’s behalf.
“This is a project I was extremely happy to support due to the significant benefits it will bring to our region,” Cleeland said.
“Our local sports clubs provide people with a strong sense of community, belonging, and an active lifestyle, and deserve all the support they can get.
“Building female-friendly change rooms will be of great benefit to not just the local sporting club but visiting teams and the entire community ... I look forward to seeing the benefits this project brings to our region.”
The long-awaited funding is not only hailed as a major win for inclusivity, but also sets a precedent for other local clubs grappling with outdated equipment and amenities.
“Many of our region’s clubs are still in desperate need of new and fit-for-purpose equipment, as well as amenities that can best serve the community,” Cleeland said.
“Improving accessibility for women in sport is a crucial part of growing participation and increasing the health, wellbeing, safety, and comfortability of girls and women across our region.
“I will continue to advocate for them (regional clubs) to receive the funding they deserve.”
