And that’s what many locals and visitors did on Wednesday, taking to the magnificent Deniliquin golf course for a competition or social game in delightful summer weather.
Others took advantage of the driving range to hone their swing, or just enjoy hitting golf balls.
The New Year’s Day competition was stableford, with four grades.
A-grade winner was Brian ‘Billy’ Bourke with 41 points from runner-up Graeme Willoughby 38; B-grade Lachie Campbell 37 from runner-up Jake Foley 36; C-grade winner Rob Armytage 36 on countback to Garry Baker; and D grade winner Tyson Payne 40 from runner-up Sarah Young 39.
Last Thursday, Boxing Day, was a stableford event won by Ross Pogonoski with 36 points on countback to Stacey Whittaker.
There were four grades for Saturday’s stableford event with some excellent scores recorded.
A-grade winner with 40 points was Darren Mitchell from runner-up Brian ‘Billy’ Bourke on 36; B-grade winner was Hugh Sutton with 36 points from runner-up Terry Howe 34; C-grade winner was Stacey Whittaker with an impressive 43 points from runner-up Geoff McCallum 37; and D grade winner with the best score of the day, 44 points, was Adrian Mulham from runner-up Tyson Payne 42.
Coming up we have a stroke event tomorrow for monthly medals, 9 holes stableford on Tuesday, stableford on Wednesday, 9 hole stableford and 18 hole versus par on Thursday, then stableford next Saturday.
The next major event is the annual Life Members’ Challenge to be played over the Australia Day weekend on January 25 and 26.
There are stableford events each day, plus 36 holes, with an excellent total prize pool of $4125.
Players can select from two shotgun starts each day, either 7.30am or 12.30pm.
Golfers who want to join the community celebration for Australia Day at the Town Hall will be able to attend those activities, then have plenty of time to get ready for a 12.30pm start.
Entry for the 2025 Life Members’ Challenge is only $20 per player per day.

Friday Night Fun continues tonight, with raffle tickets on sale from 6pm and draws from 7pm, with happy hour also from 6pm to 7pm.
Quality meals are available at a reasonable price.
