There is talk in a number of football circles that he may return to his roots and home club, the Finley Cats in the Murray League, now that he is retired from the AFL.
The injection of a recently retired AFL player could financially assist a club greatly.
The Southern Riverina News attempted to contact the Finley Football Netball Club for confirmation, but we had no response.
It is not uncommon for players return to their junior or home club once they have finished with football as a profession, as a way to return the faith the club had placed in them as juniors.
Only this past season in the Murray League we saw ex-AFL footballers running around, these included Jackson Trengove at Cobram and Sam Lloyd at Deni.
The big question on everyone's lips moving forward on the topic is, will ‘Tomahawk’ find the time to get back to Finley for a game or two?
It could shape as the move of the season.
If Hawkins plays a good chunk of games he could be the piece to push them over the line, after the Cats fell just short of in last year's senior Murray League grand final.
Hawkins played a total of 17 seasons in the highest league possible, the AFL.
He was a one time Carji Greeves medallist, a one-time Coleman medallist, a three time premiership player and a five time premiership player.
When we reported on his retirement during the season last year, Hawkins indicated he would be focusing much of his time with family and farming.
Being on an AFL players’ routine for nearly 20 years doesn’t allow for as much time for things like farming.
He now has a cattle farm just outside of Geelong in Barrabool, with the distance being one deciding factor for his movements this year.
If not for an entire season, the club may still look to have Hawkins participate in a few exhibition matches.
One could be the traditional Good Friday game against Deni Rams.
As fierce rivals, the two clubs have always seemed to share a mutual respect, regularly playing one another on Good Friday.
It’s always a big game, which could be massive if the Cats can secure ‘Tomahawk’.
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
